Checking Understanding in a Business Meeting 18 Mayıs 2013

 

Sometimes when you have a face to face business meeting with foreign clients or customers, it might be difficult to follow the whole conversation, perhaps due to your own language level, or for example due to the clients’ accent or speed.  It also feels uncomfortable to say to the people, that you want to do business with, that you need to clarify parts of the conversation.  Instead of saying ‘Sorry, I don’t understand, could you say it again’, there are a few proactive phrases that you can use to find out if you have understood correctly:

1) Are you saying that...? = Are you saying that the product will be ready in a month’s time?

2) If I understand you correctly...? =If I understand you correctly the work will be completed by June.

These can help you save face while also checking that you have the right information.
